Why do people treat their political party like a sports team?

People in this country on both sides of the aisle (as well as outside the aisle with the Green Party, etc...) treat their political party like most rabid fans treat a sports team. They support the team NO MATTER WHAT!!! Whether it's Bush's bad performance during Katrina or Obama's reversing himself on the Abu Gharib pics, these "fans" make excuses for their team and denounce and scream at the members of the other team whenever they get a chance.
Isn't the point of Democracy to use things like the 1st Amendments "right to petition the government for a redress of grievances" actually a decree from the Founding Fathers to always look with a wary eye at our politicians and call them out on all their BS regardless of party? Thoughts?

I agree. Unfortunately, individualism seems to be an endanger species. Most people know when their "side/team" is headed down a rocky slope, but cannot or will not speak out in fear of rejection. Most are not even aware they are doing this! They are unconscious souls.

Maybe it is reversed; people pay attention to sports: the stats, averages, players and coaching( even their salaries), but ignore their government until it is too late to do anything.

Most people dont care about the details. Their idea of being inteligent in politics means taking an intestest in party for their own reasons and then supporting them until they have good reason to change. Or theyre swing voters that vote by feeling election to election. My dad is a liberal and when a democrat is in office he tunes out thinking everything is ok. He wont read any articles I send him. When Bush was in office, all i recieved was global warming this, Bush that, I read them, refuted them, but it didnt matter.

Your asking for people to have common sense and intelligence, good luck with that..

As an Independent, I support no party, but can identify with the ones that hold similar values to my own. I tend to focus more on individuals than parties. I think both major parties as a whole really suck, but there are individuals within those parties that I feel do a pretty decent job.

I felt that after the last 8 years, we needed to be more fiscally conservative, and that government had grown too much. I leaned Libertarian in the last election, and probably will do so again. That does not mean I'll vote a straight Libertarian ticket. I always say vote 3rd party, but that is to help people realize the stranglehold that the two parties have on us and our election process. There is more substance outside of the two major parties than there is within.
