Why do people think that liberal economics is the same thing as having liberal opinions?

I noticed that a lot of people seem to be greatly confused about what a liberal economy actually is and seem to think that being a liberal politically-speaking automatically implies liberal economics and Viceversa... I am especially worried when people think that the USSR is an example of a liberal economy...

I think it's funny that people would know so little about economics when it pretty much rules their daily lives...
