Why do people slag off films for being far fetched?

The biggest problems for me in IJ4 are...

1. the gap - 21 years is too much. The original 3 all felt like they were set in another 'time' i.e. pre-war, when things were very differnet to today's modern world. By bringing Indy into the post WWII cold war era too much has changed. Personally i feel Ford could quite easliy have played Indy younger i.e. set in the mid 40's rather than mid 50's.

2. The change in the basic premise. All three other films have religious overtones. It's slightly less in TOD, but ultimatly it's about man's relationship with the spiritual world. This one is just about aliens, which in an X-Files film is interesting, but in IJ just seems very silly and superficial. Despite being a non-believer, both RotLA & LC at least prompted me to think about the subject matter. This one made me laugh out loud at the sillyness.

3. It felt like all of the set peices were re-works of scenes from the other three films. A chase in trucks, a fist fight, digging in the grave-yard, a miraculous escape from certain death. There wasn't much that felt original to me.

Going back to the original topic... the problem is when consistancy is lost within a film or film series. Going back to the JP example. Within the JP universe Dinosaurs can be created from pre-historic DNA. Fair enough. But does that mean all other laws of physics are suspended? The tree scene is silly. The way the car chases them down but the branches break in such a way to keep the car behind them as the climb down, and stops it just toppling out of the tree. It doesn't spil the whole film, but it's daft and has notjhing to do with the basic premise of the film therefore it can be classed as far-fetched. Similar with the electic fence.

Worst of all, though, is the way JP3 ignores the first two films and re-writes everything. The T-Rex was the daddy... the m***r f***r no-one messed with. then along comes a spinisaurous (which we'd never seen before!) and kills a T-Rex with no apparent effort. What the f***! Then, they take the Raptors and make them super-intelligent, capable of laying a trap, then 'humanely' killing the bait with a quick neck-break rather than ripping their guts out!!! Please!!! That for me is far-fetched within the JP universe and don't get me started on the ideas for JP4!

I dont think they mean realism as such...basically they mean if its believable.

I mean obviously some things in film just doesnt happen, but if something is so out of context or feels wrong, it completely takes you away from the film and reminRAB you all your doing is watching a TV screen.

The best films make you feel like you watched something that truely happend, that dont make you suddenly come awake when your immersed in it.

Thats how i feel about it anyway.

For me and god knows how many more skulls does have charm, great characters and witty action scenes.

What is wrong with having monkies fighting ruskies is Indies universe?

The first 3 movies are good but not great any way. All 4 movies serve as vehicle for Indy to go of on a mad mission.

I am guessing that maybe you are angry because you didnt get the same feeling from the new movies because you are no longer a child?

I saw the first 3 at the cinema as a child and was very entertained, and got the same buzz from skulls.

Totally agree with that.

I must admit I'm ususally the one in the cinema rolling my eyes and saying 'as IF!' in disgust etc etc, but I'm quite happy to watch escapist or multiplex stuff if it's done with skill and consistency.

I also don't like it when we are reminded that the people on screen are actually highly paid celebrities, not the characters they're pretending to be. Not enough actors can transcend this imo.

This will probably msound strange, but a key difference with the monkeys was that in RotLA the monkey was real where as in this film they were CGI. Just made it a bit less believable.

Considering the assertions SS made throughout filming that he would rely on good, old-fashioned techniques, there was an awful lot of CGI in it. It was almost as if he completed main filming, handed it over to GL & ILM, and they went to town on it in their usual CGI-tastic way. I can imagine the conversation GL & SS would have had in one of the meetings.

GL: Gee, Stevie, the start is really good, great vibe, just like American Graffitti. But what it really neeRAB, just to make it the best opening to film since Revenge Of The Sith, and I know you're going to love these.... is a bunch of CGI goffers! What do you think?
SS: *slaps head and falls off chair backwarRAB*
