Most people hated Episode 1and felt that it tarnished their beloved series. Since Jake played the central figure in the movie, he gets a big chunk of the blame.
I don't agree. He was only 10. I blame George Lucas. And our culture that encourages short attention spans, leading to an increase in sequels/prequels and remakes.

Maybe it's the same reason they blame Joe Johnston for ruining the Lost in Space film. There is something about little boys in space movies that really bugs people. It's really something I can't say, with the exception that I'm guessing just about every fanboy of the franchise wanted to BE Jake Lloyd and criticized his performance. OK, so maybe he isn't the world's greatest actor, but would hardly say that he ruined Star Wars.
Maybe Jar Jar Binks or a few other character or happenings ruined Star Wars, unless you think the person who really ruined Star Wars was director George Lucas, who interrupted the franchise for 15 years and has interrupted it a second time. Apparently there are three more movies which are coming at us after 2015. That's what I heard, but then they could be make a bit earlier than that since Lucas would be in his 70's by the final installment.
