Why do people say Ford is an American company and Honda isn't?

Ford outsources significantly and many engineers are foreigners. Honda vehicles are mostly developed in the US by Americans and are made in America by Americans. Is it because Ford is a French-originated name and Honda is a Japanese-originated name?

I think it's largely irrelevant anymore...the whole world is interconnected and any company of any size is going to have foreign stock holders, just like we have stock in foreign companies.

honda IS japanese and ford IS american. it doesnt really matter what the name is. what matters is where the company started and where the cars were made. and most cars in the US are foreign made.

Amen! I've found this 'discrimination' to only apply to Japanese originated vehicles. You notice that nobody b*tches about V-dubs or the higher end vehicles like Audi, Volvo, BMW and Benz. I drive a Toyota Solara....built in Ohio, by the way....
