Why do people put their right hand over their heart during The National Anthem

(America's National Anthem)? I never understood that....to me it doesn't make sense.
I normally just stand there with my hands behind my back....and then of course if I have a hat on I'll take it off.
Do you put your right hand over your heart.....Why?
