Why do people pay so much money for new cars?

I drive old cars, a 1987 Buick Park Avenue, and a old s10. Both were under $1,500 and have been running for about 4 years now with no problems. The Buick has 154,000 on it and the s10 has 120,000 on it, or more because of a faulty speed sensor. Both run like new. Question is, why do people pay so much money for new cars, and burden themselves with payments and higher insurance rates, when they can just buy old beaters like me, and just get the minimum insurance and be done with it?
The truck even came with a spare transmission in the bed also. Previous owner thought it was going out and sold it as a project truck. Tranny was just low on fluid, so now I got a backup
