Why do people only expect black authors to write about black people?

That is why I use a pen name. I hate it how someone would think that I only write about black people and our issues as though I am alienated from other races that are in the world? Its very insulting to hear someone say that. My African- American studies professor said that is the reason why he does not read works written by contemporary black authors. I found that to be offensive seeing as how not only am I black but I do write about other races.

I have absolutely no idea what skin colour most of the authors are whose books I read. I really don't care, either.

I agree with you that it's insulting to think that fiction written by black people is somehow different from fiction writen by white people. One of my daughter's favourite books is Noughts and Crosses, and I thought it was great too. The author is black, and we're white.

I have never noticed this. Perhaps, I wasn't paying attention. When I read a book or an article or whatever, I could care less about the color of the author's skin. I am more interested in the content of what I am reading.

Bottom line: I have never cared about skin color, hair color, religion, sex, etc., that's just who I am. I look at a person for her or his knowledge, what that individual can bring to the table. Everything else is irrelevant. And, that's the way everyone should be. The word "racism" should be deleted from our language.
