Why do people NOT want to save the environment?

This has been bothering me for quite awhile. Since people live on Earth, they must want the Earth to be clean, nice, a beautiful place right? But apparently, some people hates the Earth enough to pour oil in the rivers, lakes, stuff like that, hoping they'll kill some animal. Or maybe even spraying stuff in hope that the ozone layer would have more holes. But since they live on earth, wouldn't they want the ozone layer to help them protect from harmful sun rays? So I was wondering why people don't want to save the earth.
 
I worked with a person who didn't bother recycling even though his city required he pay the fee and his reason was he believed technology and recovery costs would eventually make landfill reclamation a snap. Like as if as a Trekkie he believed man would build replicator/transporters able to reform junk matter into fertile soil. It's been many many years and I still can't latch that dream.
