why do people most people automatically lick our wounds?

Why when people get cut we have have an impulse to taste our own blood? or is it more of an instinct reaction to clean our wounds with our saliva like animals? does the enzymes in our saliva have the ability to kill bacteria and cauterize wounds to stop bleeding?
