Why do people just say "Hi" or something mundane like that on Facebook chat?

Usually girls do this. Even ones I believe have no sexual interest. Why do people do this?

Because its a standard and polite greeting

It's generally how someone starts a conversation. Is there some other way you strike up a conversations besides a standard greeting?

So true! A typical conversation goes like:
person 1: Hi
person 2: Hi
person 1: wuu2?
person 2: nothing lol wbu?
person 1: not much lol

... and then the conversation dies! I believe most people are either incapable of holding an intelligent conversation, or they just have nothing even remotely interesting to talk about and they're just on chat for the sake of it.

Because they want to engage in talking without starting the conversation. They want you to start it which is stupid like honestly...say something except hi or hello or wassup or hey if you want to talk to me.

If that's all they say I just ignore them now.
