Why do people judge based off appearance?

Hmm, so, I'm a bit confused. People have such harsh views on everything, but why is that? I know goths that skip down the school hallways. Emo isn't even that uncommon of a style now, but people who take it a little farther are often harassed and shunned, and goths seem to often be avoided. Or maybe this is just where I go to school.

It doesn't make sense to me though. I wouldn't avoid someone for wearing a pink skirt or really overdone make-up, even though I'm not a fan of the colour or caked on make-up, but they would avoid someone for a little make-up and all black? If someone was emotionally unstable, why would you shun them?

People often laugh at the most gruesome things in history class, but I don't see the happy goth laughing, I see the 'normal' kids, the conformist, laughing at the death and mutilation. One of my best friends is this blonde-haired, blue eyed, pretty girl, who appears happy and bubbly, but NEVER have I met anyone so completely focused on how depressing their life is, and on telling others about her latest therapy session or making them depressed too.

So, I guess my real question. Why do people judge based off looks? When the stereotypes are obviously exactly that, just stereotypes.
