hey thats a very good question which i have no answer to :) ive just noticed! OMG!

I have observed that when in a restaurant, the waiter or waitress typically flips over the bill after serving a table, so that the part showing how much money was spent is hidden from view until the customer turns it over. This wouldn't matter except for the fact that it seems that people subconsciously do it everywhere, almost as if everyone is quietly conforming to the same norm.

it is not good manners for the person paying the bill to announce how much was spent. the host (person paying) has invited everyone to dinner for a good time and friendship- not to show off how much money they spent on it. so the check is turned over so the guest can not see the total.
