Why do people give you weird looks if you do something stupid?

I mean aren't we allowed to mess up every once in a while? For example, I went back to my hometown, where I don't live anymore and went to this service store, and my card wasn't working so I went ahead and tried renewing it. After the whole process and they couldn't figure out what it was, the guy goes "oh..you don't LIVE here anymore, the services/systems of the town are only for residents, sorry."

And then they all just glared at me like "what a retard," now mind you I've lived there my whole life, and constantly go there b/c I associate w/ppl there, and it just kinda slipped my mind.

I mean do people really expect us to be competent and with it 24/7, and never make small boo boo's along the way?
I mean okay, I GET where they're coming from it's a totally hit your head against the wall d&mb move, but at the same time it's like, just laugh it off and don't look at me like I'm screwed up or whatever.

The looks I got were almost like "wtf are u on?"

Perhaps it's bc i'm an adult, I'm 27, and people just don't expect adults to behave in absent minded ways. I don't know, someone fill me in.
 
Seeing someone do something they consider "stupid" or absent-minded bothers people, and I think it scares them a bit. Try not to take it so personally, and by that I mean, don't let it get to you as a put down, especially if they don't say anything.

Where the h*ll is this that the services are only for people of that town? That sounds like some exclusive, religious community and very narrow and inhumane!

No, everyone knows that we are not all on top of everything 24/7, but many take every opportunity to look down on you if you aren't! There's a specific type of temperament that does this way too much. And they tend to flock to certain sectors in society--police force, teachers, military, bureaucracies, churches.

Your best bet is to develop a solid self-esteem that is not shaken by the little derogatory putdowns of others.
 
The weird look is the "OMG you did something stupid" look. Don't do stupid stuff then they won't give you the "OMG you did something stupid" look.

But yeah anyway, seriously, I don't know what the big deal is, people need to lighten up a little. How were you meant to know that it was for town residents only?
 
People give wierd looks to others because it makes them feel a little more normal. Think about it, why should people care about what others are doing when it has nothing to do with them. They just do it so they can feel better about themselves.
