Why do people get offended by religion being discussed?

And even more so, why do people get offended by bible verses?.
Intelligent answers only thanks.
I am actually a Christian myself, but I respect other peoples religious choices. I have found the worst to get angry, offended and defensive are those that believe they have powers and can communicate with the dead. They seem to find anything, and I mean anything a Christian says totally offensive, yet say that they respect others beliefs.

I'm talking about 2 people in particular, perhaps they are just threatened not sure.. I don't see the need to be offended though!.

Because religion is a craptastic subject in social gatherings... Here on R&S i could care less about what people think about my views, however, if i talk to my parents about religion someone gets pissed, cus you said something that goes against their beliefs.

Because is one of the "sure ways" and when you contradict or challenge their believes they dont know how to react.
The best way to do is not to think, really, because faith in any religion is based on what that person believes, so when you challenge their believes you are challenging what she/he lives for.
I learned the hard way to keep my mouth shut even though I dont think that Peter was the first pope and all that jazz..

Because most think they have the monopoly on the truth with regards to what the bible says and that is why there are over 30,000 sects of Christianity that agree to disagree.

As for verses, you can pick any type of verse to suit a particular agenda or belief but as they say the Devil himself can quote the bible.

I'm not offended by religious discussion. If I were, I wouldn't be here, and I wouldn't partake in it.

I'm not offended by bible verses either, but they anger me. If someone is such an ardent believer, they should have more to show for their validity of their beliefs than the millenia-old thoughts of fanatical zealots.

The first one is a tough question. I guess because there are central tenets in pretty much every religion to have undying and unconditional faith, so when someone questions an aspect of an individuals beliefs (religious or non) the easiest thing to do is ruin their credibility by attacking the individual as opposed to the argument (which both believers and non-believers do)

People get offended by Bible Verses because people who bring up Bible Verses often refer to them as if they are fact as opposed to the views, opinions, poems or fictional stories of some random individual from three thousand years ago which has been translated and re-translated so many times that even if it were re-stating fact it would not hold any credibility.

Half the people "discussing" it are ignorant and uneducated and don't know what they're talking about. Instead of giving an educated answer, they use Bible verses as their sole "research".

Atheists, agnostics, pagans, etc do know what is in the Bible and what are its teachings. In fact, they know so much by research of the Bible that they refuse to accept it as truth/fact. So saying that someone doesn't know what is in the Bible unless they are a Christian is blatant ignorance.

I've noticed that a lot of people go to the Religion and Spirituality thread just to rant and call others stupid because of their beliefs. I'm not really sure why they keep coming back if they get offended every time someone expresses a viewpoint other than their own... I quite like Bible verses (as long as they are taken in context, and yes I do check) because they show that the person has actually bothered to learn about their topic. This goes for verses from any holy text. From a Atheistic view point, though, I suppose it's like trying to back up your statement by quoting a sheet of facts you just made up.

Oh, various reasons.
Many are raised or educated believing that there is no God, or that if there is a God, he does not meddle in human affairs. It is a purely materialistic and sociological approach to religion.
Some are raised in an environment that discourages the practice of religion, which is treated as a private affair. After all, religion is a call to duty and responsibility. The stakes are probably too high for some.
Some do not acknowledge a singular reality with its system of right and wrongs, preferring instead a very subjective system of good or bad.
For some, it is probably too painful to realize their sins and errors that they would rather forget about them and settle for a life outside any religion. They then put up all sorts of justifications to refuse to discuss religion. Underlying this is a sense of inability to be good. Of course, they miss the whole point of religion.
Oddly, we can probably summarize all of them into one thing: ignorance. These people, perhaps by repudiating the grace of God, prefer, consciously or not, to live in ignorance. That is really sad. They do not know or refuse to know the happiness in store for them.
We need to pray for people who refuse to face up to religion.

About bible verses, I've met some people who think the Bible is begging the question. They prefer the first step: that it is in accord with logic or reason to suppose that there is a God. That is quite remediable. The leap toward believing in Christ is another matter. That's where the grace of God would probably fit in.

I have been in this same situation, of course I am not a christian, but I find that most people get offended by religion as a topic of discussion is because most people have a closed mind and do not want their beliefs challenged.
Besides it is proven that the Bible has been rewritten to fit the laws of man.
Would you want someone to quote Anton Zander LeVey's Satanic Bible to you?
Probably not because it goes against your own ideology of the divine forces of the universe.

I believe most people need to box-in their feelings into neat constructs which 'prove' something about their being, their background or culture. Religion is multi faceted and multi- denominational. Everyone comes to the awareness of God from a different direction. And sometimes the same path.!
Rarely is religion broached in terms of faith or as a philosophy for living a better way of life.
The hackles get raised when ever a diverse opinion pricks a sense of doubt or slight mis interpretation or understanding.
So it' all too easy to offend a sensiblity even within a particular - bible verse, used to defend a point of view.
This is the usual bind when verse is used as weaponry.
The Old Testament is informed of Moses' Law.
And the New Testament is the works of Jesus' apostles, but under the same God of Solomon David and Moses.

My mum was very spiritual but unlearned in a lot of verse.
She would say that the simple folk could understand the teachings of Jesus but equally confuse the 'wise'.
I suppose the spirit moves us differently.
Often it is our ego that gets in the way of communication.

I think its because eveyone want to make people of other religions believe theirs is better? And they wont accept the fact that someone else might believe in another 'GOD'! Well thats what I think anyway. You just have to look at most of the wars that have gone on over the ages to see what I mean, do a bit of research and you'll see that most of them have started over one nation not being able to accept anothers beliefs. I myself dont have a problem with others beliefs just so you all know!
