Why do people do that? It's weird and like hurtful?

People would go up to me or anyone else and talk to them and smile and yeah great and when they ask how old are you and what grade it's like "Gr 9 or 14" they sort of drift off and look in the other direction. Why do people do that? I mean I can pass for someone older like 16 etc etc. It's weird huh?
By the way I do act mature for my age etc etc :) Any any thoughts and input on this subject etc would be greatly appreciated!
