...am i right? Why do people diss the fish bowl? I mean really, Theyre efficient for the simplicity of fish keeping.
I mean really, If you get a fish bowl worth $2 at thrift shops, and they hold around 2 gallons of water! Thats enough space to put a small female betta or even some small feeder guppy. You could probably even put a minnow in there.

What pisses me off is how people just "hate" on the fish bowl so badly just because theres idiots who put a goldfish in there.

(currently have a 55 gallon,30, 10, and two 1 gallon tanks or fish bowls)

please nobody answer with the 1 gallon fish rule crap *Total B.S.*

Please and thank-you
Thanks for the answers you guys... and pyle221... STFU... really? if i was in a closet? (Smells like PETA to me) rofl.

A bowl of unfiltered water just can't provide stable water chemistry for ANY fish. The toxins will just grow and grow unless you do water changes very regularly several times a week - and those regular water changes will just stress the fish out even more. Not to mention you have no control over temperature. It's a lose lose situation.

The only way a bowl can be "good" is if you do something with the Walstad Method - heavily planted bowls that become mini ecosystems, although they rarely include fish and take some setting up to get balanced. Far from filling a bowl with water and plonking a fish in it!

if it is filtered then i have no problem with it...if its not filtered then you run in to the problem of stagnate water....and lack of gas exchange and unstable cycles and unstable PH....if you do keep fish in a fish bowl unfiltered then you decrease the live of the fish greatly....

A female betta in a bowl. Ok. But what about the fact that they are tropical species? There isnt room for a heater in that bowl. Thats why 2.5 gallons is minimum recommended for a betta, because thats about the smallest heater thats made.

I stand by all fish need filters to clean their water.

And the main reason bowls suck, is because it doesnt give the fish any room to swim. Bettas, minnows, and goldfish are the main candidates for a bowl. Goldfish grow way too large for something like that, so most dont live very long (they should live about 15 years). Bettas actually swim around very actively when given room. I keep males in 2.5 gallon tanks and they are constantly moving. I have about 10 females in a 29 gallon, and again, constantly moving. Minnows are fast moving fish that need alot of room. And one gallon is not enough room for a 2 inch fast moving fish.

Of course I am dissing fish bowls. You shouldn't put animals in bowls. I don't know how they do things in Mexico, but show some compassion for animals here. You just sound like a dumb ass. Taking care of a fish properly is not in a bowl. Same reason you left Mexico. It's too small of space with all those people. Of all people you should feel compassionate for these animals. You disgust me.

It's possible to make you live in an unheated closet too right? I tried the 1 gallon crapolas. Never had a betta last more than 2 years and fought numersou illnesses in that time. I had 2 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank for the same amount of time and neither of them got sick once.(the tank has a 30 gallon filter on it). I'm happy to report the goldies have moved into their 55 gallon home and the betta is taking over the old goldie apartment(10 gallon).

Well, if you know what your doing, than I guess it could be fine. A couple feeder guppies would do fine in a fish bowl, provided that it has many live plants inside, because they act as mini ecosystems. These guys on my fish forums were discussing how they used to keep feeder guppies in a 1 gallon jar with live plants inside, and they'd reproduce like crazy, and do great! Minnows would be fine too. Just with all those fish, you should have live plants.
Like I said the first time, it would be a good idea for more experienced fish keepers, because they will know the proper amount to clean, and the right amount of time in between cleanings.
I am not completely against bowls, just appalled by the people that will keep goldfish and such inside.
Yes, hardy fish will do fine if you know what you're doing, but goldfish and such won't, like you said.
For a beginner, I recommend a 10 gallon tank, because they aren't too small, where you are severely limited in fish choice, but you aren't struggling with the maintenance of such a huge tank.

But I'd say those 3, maybe even 2 fish mentioned are the only ones that can go in an unfiltered (except for plants.) 1-2 gallon bowl. That's it, that's all.

Thanks for your opinion.
