Why do people complain about the movie not being the same as the book?

People get so attached to books, that when movies deviate from them, it's hard to understand why. Sometimes things are changed and the reader/viewer doesn't understand why something was changed or left out. I think the main reason people find books as better is because books are better at delving into the character's minds. Movies only have limited ways of doing this (narration, spoken dialogue to show thoughts).

I hear it so often that every movie that is based on a book is not exactly the same. I figured that its not the same because it would cost too much to make the film and the film would be really long if it was to be exactly like the book. Why do you think people complain?

Many modern films are made from short stories lasting only a few pages long. Most scripts are hundreds of pages of dialogue and so often the original source material has to be changed in order to stretch across a feature length. Take Spike Jones "Where The Wild Things Are" Soon to be released. The original story is very short so in order for it to work as a film new characters, sub plots and changes in the story have the need to be introduced. This is of course likely to upset some fans of the original story who's main draw is often the original stories simplicity. Perhaps feeling introducing newer elements only over complicates what is essentially a children s fairytale.
In Longer novels some people it is simply the case that readers usually have a preconceived idea in there minds of how the characters, scenery and visual styling looks. Everyone's personal idea of this will differ drastically making it impossible to please everyone's idea of what the story should look like and how it should be told.
