People who first get into art due to anime influences (wow, Naruto/Bleach/similar generic anime show is so cool! I wish I could draw like that) then expose themselves to other artistic influences - i.e. by taking an art course. They then find other artists who use a more realistic style, but often find that after drawing anime for so long they find it hard to draw what they see, this problem occuring mostly with faces (which is argueably the most important aspect). They then blame anime for their inability to draw the way they want.
Also, most industries (except, of course, the manga industry) prefer art styles to be more detailed and 'traditional' western style than anime (although well executed anime styles are acceptable). Movies and video games are examples of this.
