Why do people compare Jaws to the Exorcist when debating the scariest movie ever?

I've often heard this debated, and I honestly can't figure out.
Who in their right mind would even consider Jaws to be scarier than The Exorcist?

While Jaws is a good movie, and it was pretty entertaining, I slept with the light on for two weeks after seeing The Exorcist (I know, I'm a wimp :D)

Which movie scared you more?

Definately the Exorcist. Not only was it visually frigthening it was distrubing and messed with your mind. Jaws was just visually frightening.

I wasn't scared of either of them when I was young. I would think that Exorcist would be scarier than Jaws though.

The movie that scared the hell out of me when I was a kid was Evil Dead. I used to watch it up at my Grandparents house up in the mountains. They have a cabin type house with large windows so when it got dark, it was scary outside.

I've never understood the debate. I was mildly entertained by Jaws but never scared of it. Maybe it's because anybody who's seen Jaws has a moment of hesitation about going into the ocean from then on. And the feeling is very widespread. You can't really name any other movie that engenders that kindof broad response.

I've never seen The Exorcist, but I have seen Jaws and I didn't think that movie was really all that scary. It had some disturbing scenes, but no where near being the scariest movie ever.

Then again, I do my best to avoid scary movies. I got tricked into seeing Saw III when it came out and my friends told me it was really just a story about a man who tries to teach people to truly appreciate life. I never forgave them.
