...clothes fulfilling? I mean I am one of these people who does it.
I would buy a $300 handbag when the ones from other stores that are probably can hold my stuff just as well is much cheaper.

Today my friend noticed this and (she is like a tomboy) asked "Why do people do that? It's so stupid!"
I don't think it's stupid, I think it's the label-lust and it makes me feel good in a way.

But, she did ask a good question, I was not able to answer it quickly without some thoughts.

Don't just say, "its because they want the brand"
Why + How does it make them feel better?
 
I think it might be a pride thing (it shows that they have money and can spend it), but i agree with your friend. if the clothes are cute and look good on you, wear them. it doesnt matter what the brand it
 
Well the type of fabric is a big thing.
Dior uses silk in their scarfs, silk is very prominent and it lasts a long time as long as you take care of it.

Another thing is aesthetic.
Most designers have pieces that you couldn't find anywhere else.
