Why do people always get New Orleans accent wrong and over exaggerate our culture?

Why do people who make movies set in New Orleans think we have this slow countrified drawl. And why do people think we dress up and act hella stupid (I mean, really hella stupid)?
 
People are so ignorant sometimes. It's hard to break certain stereotypes, and so people tend to perpetuate them. I don't know exactly WHY people do it, but I suspect it has to do with the fact that New Orleans has been known for being like that for so many years, and people are too stupid to realize that its just an exaggerated stereotype.
 
people that don't live in an area often go off of stereotypes. people that live in the North often think people in the south wear coveralls and have a piece of hay sticking out of their mouth, and live on farms. you got to remember, lots of people spend their whole life in one area, and never get to see all of the great cultural things that the US has to offer. i was fortunate to join the Military, and travel all over, and it was a real learning experience for me. Don't take it personal.
