Why do my internal drives read media but wont write?

I have two optical drives, one is a cdrw/dvd the other is a dl dvd burner. They both worked fine until i just happened to notice the other day when trying to burn an .iso that my dvd drive wouldn't write. It has been about a month since ive tried to write anything on either of the two as I generally stream avi's to the set from the networked pc's. I digress, They will both still read media with data on them, but when black media is inserted, they both say no disk. I don't get the "no media" messege, just no disk inserted. I have alcohol 120 virtual drives, and magic iso burner. I have used alcohol to virtualy mount iso's but since this have unmounted/disabled the virtual drives, as i though i had too many ide drives even though two were virtual i though something was happening, but still the same problem. In device manager, it says both drives are working properly.
Any suggestions?

try deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry by following the steps:
Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the right hand column, look for any of the following values,
UpperFilters
LowerFilters
UpperFilters.bak
LowerFilters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete then restart your computer.
