Why do my Apple earbuds keep not working?

I've gone through about 3 pairs of apple earbuds (Canalphones) That either the left earbud randomly stops working or they just stop working altogether. The earbuds that came with my ipod still work but they're not very comfortable on my ears and i am not fully satisfied with the sound quality.... Why do these canalphones keep breaking? Is it the fact that i swing them around sometimes? or the fact that i wrap them around my ipod too tight? (To avoid them getting knots) Is there a good, cheap pair of canalphones i can get for my ipod that don't break too easily, isn't too expensive, really good sound quality and doesn't make noise when you move around with them in your ears?
