Why do martial arts make you feel so powerful?

I'll be getting my black belt (karate)...soon? I hope. Few 8ish weeks?
A lot of karate, in fact, I'd go as far to say that 85%, is mental. Training your mind; patience, tolerance and having a realistic idea of what your abilities really are. I know karate, but I'm not going to pick a fight with the terminator -- unless I'm forced to.

Yet, I've gotten slide tacked from behind in soccer before. Usually, on the first time, I'll just tell the guy what's what. If he does it again, I won't so as much restraint. Last week, he tried it three times, and I was done showing restraint. He punched me from behind (in the back) -cheep shot, let him land it too (so I could have an excuse to engage him), and within minuets, he was in tears -- this from a bloke who's about 15-20 pounds heavier (I'm about 160ish and nearly 17).
Without karate, I couldn't do that. Some of the moves, make you feel nearly superhuman. The Shuto to Eyes/bridge of nose, while I've never used it in the real world, if I were to, your nose would be broken, your eyes, blurry and dazed, and you'd be in a world of pain, fast.

It appeals to innate masculinity, being able to stand up for yourself, and others. Although, you are strongest if you can resolve the situation without violence.
Still, when I walk down the street, I feel confident, not cocky (haha), but confident that I can stand on my own two feet.

I'm still only human, and I know I STILL have limits
But, Why do you think martial arts make you feel so powerful?
