Why do many people defend Toyota?

Why do so many people defend Toyota? like they defend Toyota in everything. but never defend ford, gm or chrysler. I mean some people defend Ford, Gm or Chrysler like myself or others but it's only on a small scale, rather when people defend Toyota in a big scale or other japanese car companies. I just want to know why people still defend them. And please don't give me crap about American cars that still suck. were' not in the 70s or 80s that happed way back then. this is now.

1. Actually, it's the other way around; many American nationalists are defending American cars

2. Toyota doesn't need defending. It's still a good quality car brand. Yes, I am aware that there was one study that suggests that Ford might be better than Toyota (BTW, Toyota was still at the top). However, there are more than one study supporting Toyota being better than Ford.

Hmmmmm....overlooking the obvious emotional aspect of your question, it seems that the clear answer is because those folk who "defend Toyota", as you have dubbed it, do so because they've had good experiences with this particular make of vehicle. But I think that there's a more subtle phenomenon at work here that has to do with the haves versus the have-nots, if you will. Seeing CEOs who "take the money and run" with these huge severance packages that dwarf the lifetime-salary of the average Joe also causes most Americans to wanna spew chunks, to use the vernacular. The image of the American auto industry took a beating in the 80s (and before) as you suggested and quite frankly that is something that will take a LONG time to dissipate. Then you couple that with the the lack of vision and arrogance of the American automotive manufacturing industry in the "now" as you call it, and it's little wonder that many folk opted for and continue to opt for an import. Lots of folk have cited/continue to cite to their relability, inexpensive operation and comparably little maintenance. Replacement parts were/are also relatively inexpensive and that's a winning proposition.

I'm don't have a dig in this fight actually, but my Toyota 4x4 has 263,000+ miles on it and it's still kicking. I got 260K before overhauling the engine in April. I chose to do that over buying new because everything else still worked on the truck; the power steering, electrical, A/C, heating, ventilation, drivetrain and suspension systems were still in great shape. I am the only owner since 1992 and I will keep it running until it falls apart, which will be a long time from now.

These are the facts and they are the reason I have an import and would probably buy a new import again, though I would consider an American option.

All that having been said, I must confess to becoming a bit weary of Toyota. You see, parts for my 4x4 aren't exactly easy to find. Well many of them are, but some are not. And Toyota has adopted this position of not manufacturing some older parts to serve in a replacement role in favor of "forcing" you to buy new simply because there aren't many parts to keep your older vehicle running. This smacks of the American auto industry of years past and if such an attitude continues to prevail, it would actually turn the tide away from imports. Again, that would/will take some time to manifest itself.

We'll see where things lead. I do know that I am both happy and upset with Toyota at the same time. I've expressed that sentiment in a letter recently. 'Waiting for a reply...
