why do judges sentence people to like 845 years in prison when they know that...

I think it's to make absolutely sure they never get paroled. Some people serve half their sentence or less and get paroled...that'll never happen with lengthy sentences.
 
They do this because each sentence has a mininum time. The total in mininum would be enough to keep them in prison for the rest of their lives with these convictions
