Why do inmates in Canadian federal prisons, get their College and University...

...education for free.? I’d have to pay like $10,000 for a University degree, and some inmate doing time gets everything prepaid for by the government while their in jail.
They also receive free dental, a psychiatrist, and a Doctor anytime they feel they need one while their there.
I’d have to pay $130 for my dental, make an appointment for next week to see a doctor… Oh and pay $70 for my medication… lets not forget the psychiatrist I can only see once every one or two months. Is this an encouragement to get arrested?
Yeah they do have a job advantage too, while their in prison before they get out. The government keeps positions open for them to get them started.

I agree that it is messed up that people in prison seem to live better lives than us on the outside, like you said free education, free doctors checkup, free TV, free use of weights and so forth. It is almost tempted to get arrested to get that stuff for free.

on the other hand though (about the education) they want people that have a chance to get out to have an education background so when they get out they have a chance of getting a job and not possibly going back to their old habits (like robbery or whatever) and end up back in prison. I dont know if I agree with that or not but i can kinda see why they might offer it for.

Good luck finding employment after spending time in prison. Although it is unfair that good citizens pay for their education, it may seem reasonable since it may be part of their rehabilitation program.

It's all about remaking the person. A criminal serving time, either was arrested for robbing, the government figures maybe it's because he doesn't have a good job or education. If we let him loose he'll probably do it again. A person who murders the government says while they have psychological issues that need treatment, so they have a psychiatrist available. Everyone should be entitled to health care. the medication is for free because they can't afford it quite often. Dental is another necessity. The government wants to change these people for the better.

Sure, break the law and go to jail, see how easy they have it.
It's like living in a dream. They serve you pastries on fluffy pillows and rub your feet everyday.

Mebbe they are trying to encourage them to adopt a different life style and not go back to breaking the law as soon as they get out of jail.

First...it's called rehabilitation...most of those people in jail wouldn't ever have a chance to get an education like that...if they use it they probably will change their ways and not be back in jail again.

Second...you still have the upper hand. Say a position was down to you and an ex-con with a degree....who do you really think they'll pick?

Update: They may help with placement of jobs...but they are jobs that you wouldn't want anyway with a college degree. Just face it...you still are in a better place.

Be glad you only have to spend $10,000 for a degree. I go to an average small state school and have spent soooo much more than that! Most jobs that require a degree will not accept felons. They do deserve to be treated as humans while in custody...as much as I some times wish differently. They are usually taught a trade that they can perform when out of prison so they can have some hope when they get out and try to steer them on the right path. Many people who end up in prison did not have good lives or good role models (I am not excusing their behavior as they still know right from wrong) but if they see that they can better themselves some of them will jump right on it. The prices you are complaining about for medical and dental...feel lucky, we're spending about $3000 on my husbands dental this month.

Life in jail or in prison isn't fun. You are told what to do and when to do it. If you don't do it, you are punished usually on lockdown or in isolation. It's a lonely life. I used to supervise inmates.
