SAS members who had their identities revealed have been assassinated before. Retired members have been too. It's the same with all Special Forces or other elite personnel. In fact only recently 4 Israeli agents used Australian passports to get into Dubai and assassinate a high ranking official in HAMAS's military. An informer gave his identity to them and they hunted him down.

When a whole army wants you dead and know who you are, they will hunt you down and eventually kill you. That's why for the safety of personnel it is of utmost importance to protect the identity of personnel. Otherwise, assassins controlled by enemy nations will kill them.
