Why do idiots keep calling the Republican party, "the party of Lincoln"?

Are people aware that the Republican party actually consisted of liberals in the 1800's, while the Democratic party was mostly conservatives? Think about it, Republicans back then were mostly from northern & northeastern, industrialized regions. Democrats were from the rural heavily-evangelical south and supported slavery. Today, the northeastern areas and urban areas are Democratic, while the rural evangelical areas in the south and other areas are Republican. The KKK for example, a terrorist group with far-right ideology, was founded by Democrats from the South. Yet, today, the KKK generally associates itself with Republicans. Most blacks today associate themselves with Democrats -- you think African-Americans side with the original Democratic party of slavery and the Ku Klux Klan? Probably not.

The parties went through several re-alignments in the 20th century, and the conservatives gradually shifted to Republicans and the liberals moved over to Democrats.

The only similarity between Republicans/Democrats of today, and the parties of the 1800's, is the name. I wish the parties didn't go through realignments, since having the same name tends to confuse most people. Educated people know otherwise.

Basically, I generally tend to vote Democratic. If I grew up in the 1800's, I'd probably vote Republican. The ideologies are similar. And Republicans today would most likely be voting Democratic back then.
mutant: In name only. But they were two different parties. Lincoln was a liberal.
Joe L: Wrong again. There are more black politicians in the Democratic Party, than the Republican Party.

Why do so many Republicans in the South own Confederate flags? The Confederacy back in the 1800's was mostly Democratic. Think about it.

True. I wish we could do away with political parties. They ruin everything.

What's really right for this country is the middle ground - but moderates are almost never elected (bye bye McCain)! A poisonous "us and them" mentality takes over, where if you're not one party you must be evil, etc.

We have lost sight of what it really means to be a conservative or liberal in this country - and we have lost sight of what it really means to be AMERICAN!

I heard all these liberals saying they were proud of their country for the first time this week and it made me absolutely sick. This is the country of Lincoln, of Martin Luther King Jr., of Michael Bloomberg, of Google and Apple and Microsoft, of Jesse Jackson, of Billy Graham. We have a lot to to be proud of!

The Republican party was founded in Jackson Mi in the early 1850's, and they later nominated Lincoln.

Gee I don't know...The democrats back then supported slavery i.e getting something for nothing. Seems like the same party to me!

Lincoln was a Republican. Kennedy was nothing like the Democrats we have now. As a member of our finest generation he would probably turn over in his grave if he saw what we have now. Should we claim he could have actually been a Republican?
