Seems to me that no one from the most hard core right wing, supply sider to the greenest, left wing, eco nut ever mentions the possibility of encouraging reproductive responsibility. I hear allot about the stresses the human population puts on the ecosystem, resources, and itself. I hear all kinds of good and not so good ideas for alleviating these stresses through new technologies. How hard is it to say, "Maybe we shouldn't be having more than one or two babies per couple."? Imho, that would do allot, especially long term, to reduce pretty much every kind of human and environmental stress.
Tuba: It's not so much a plan as an idea: global standards for education and stabilization of governments. I would have to admit that this wouldn't be easy to accomplish. There would be social, political and religious taboos to overcome. Overpopulation, poverty and chaos can give advantages to the powers that be, especially arms dealers, defense contractors, religious leaders and totalitarian dictators. These could be major sources of resistance
By education, I mean especially with regard to the strain placed on resources by overpopulation. Stabilization of governments and societies would be crucial because it would be next to impossible to convince people suffering from disease or genocidal guerrila warfare that they're making too many babies. It is my understanding that societies that begin to enjoy improvement in average lifestyles and education naturally reproduce less.
