why do I keep getting root rot in my deep water culture hydroponics setup?

I have a basic home made hydroponics setup where the roots grow through a basket and eventually grow down to sit in a bucket of water that has air bubbles running through. the water temperature is fine, no light is getting through to the roots, the ppm is at about 300 with vegetative nutrients, the pH is usually anywhere from 5.8-6.1
the only thing I can think of is maybe my nutrients have gone bad, but i am trying to eliminate all other possibilites before I spend money on more nutrients.
