Why do I have to pay a school tax?

It gets taken out of everything---sales tax, paycheck, even my phone bills. But I don't have kids and I went to a private school for 12 years and I paid my own way through college (which is what my kids will do if I ever have any). So why do I have to pay for something I never have/never will use?
