Why do hypoxic patients presented in the ER become combative?

Along the lines of my previous question, I had a severe asthma attack a few months ago, which landed me in the hospital for two weeks. I don't recall the events of the day it happened; however, when I awoke from a drug-induced sedation (one week later), I was in ICU and on a ventilator. I had horrible bruises on my wrists and and up my inner arms as well as my ankles. (The bruises were clearly not from being stuck with needles.) I can only assume I was not cooperative in the ER and was held down so that I could be treated. (Which I'm okay with, since they did whatever had to be done to save my life.)

As this is totally against my nature (I normally just do as I'm told), I'm wondering why I didn't cooperate...
