Why do historians consider the election of 1896 the most decisive election

in American History.? Why do historians consider this election such a turning point? I'm getting confused as to exactly how the gold standard plays into this.

Here's a little tidbit. "The Wizard of Oz" is a parable to the election of 1896. Oz is D.C. with the Wizard being the President, the Lion is William Jennings Bryan, the ruby slippers are the silver standard (the slippers were silver in the original book), whe Yellow Brick Road is the Gold Standard, the scarecrow represents farmers, the Tin Man represents the industrial worker, andDorothy represents American values. It's no coincedence that the city is named Oz. Oz=ounces, which is refering to the Gold Standard. In Frank L. Baum's original story, the good witches were from the areas where the Populists had the most influence.
