Why do governments around the world refuse to legislate against pollution?

Ever since plastic was invented decades ago, we have known that it is non-biodegradable and toxic. So why, decades later, have no governments legislated to insist that plastic can only be made which is non-toxic and biodegradable or at least 100% recycled. The oceans are awash with discarded plastic which will never degrade.
What stops the human race from taking responsibility for it's actions and taking care of our planet for future generations?

And plastics are just the tips of the polluting iceberg... there are plenty of toxic chemicals that we pump into the environment daily

And the US military uses depleted uranium in it's weapons...
It's just unbelievable...

Am I right to give up caring any more?

if plastics were so toxic, then why do you drink from them eat from them, have them surgically implanted or used during medical procedures.

You personally dump toxic waste with every breath, fart, excretion, so why not start there.

Don't give up caring, but focus on the specific items. Start with legislation on Hg and asbestos. Work your way up, quit generalizing.

BTW, depleted U235 has not been found to be toxic, it's all a hype.

Because to do so if the Technology were available which in some cases is not then the whole World would go into a huge slump.It is not free nor cheap.I think companies should shoulder the resonsibality of there own messes and we all know that ain't happening.Most will only make a start if matching federal dollars are available.And in other countries they don't have that to fall back on.
 
The answer is MONEY! The answer to everything that makes no sense is MONEY. Why do we not legislate against pollution? There is too much money to be lost. Why do we do nothing about health care for everyone?
There's too much money to be invested. Why do we do nothing about American, et al, jobs going overseas? More profits to be made. Why do we cling to foriegn oil? More profit in the short term. Why do we not embrace new clean energy technology? Not enough profit in the short term. It's MONEY. It's always been MONEY. Don't think it's anything else.
