Why do film studios keep pumping out romantic comdies?

I can't stand them personally, and there seems to be more and more coming out each year! I don't mind a good love story like The Notebook but these films are regurgitated rubbish, it's the same basic storyline changed slightly and it's always the same actors, yes I'm looking at you Hugh Grant and Jennifer Aniston. Looking at the figures these films don't seem to do very well, so why are they continually released?

They're relatively cheap for studios to make, and they practically ALWAYS make a profit, even if we're not talking 'Avatar' levels of success.

Yeah I think that oretty much explains it. I cant stand crappy rom-coms but good ones always totally sucker me in and leave me tear stained my cold heartless reputation shattered around me :D :D

Rom coms are one of the few genres that capture the female market. The Hollywood studios will often launch a rom com against a big action film or when there is a big sports event to be tellivised in the States.

They are often cheaper to produce than other genres, easier to export and have good DVD sales.

Something like The Proposal for example will end up being the most profitable film of the year without huge investment.

Pumping out? Really? As a woman who loves a good rom com, they are very rare on the ground, they seem to be like buses though at the moment, you wait for one and all of a sudden 3 come at once. I think that's because they rushed a couple out for Valentine's Day, but the rest of the year? We're lucky to get 5 or 6 in a year.

If you go into a video store or look on Sky Box Office, compare how many romcoms there are in comparison to other genres?

I hate Westerns and Horror, but I don't complain about the number of Horror films there are in comparison to Rom Coms. I just don't watch them, there is enough choice out there for everyone.

I like a good rom com but sometimes they get released for no reason other than to sell a certain actor or actress - did you hear about the morgans is a good example of this.
they assumed because it had hugh grant and sarah jessica parker it would be a hit but it was pants!!

though i must admit to thoroughly enjoying the bounty hunter just yesterday lol
