Why do fashion designers put models in those whacked-out, avant guard outfits...

...that nobody would ever wear? Not even in New York have I ever seen anything so bizarre as the stuff on many catwalks. Isn't the purpose of these shows for designers to sell their wares?
 
They want to make a statement and show that they are unique individuals with totally different perspectives compared to everyone else. Fashion people want to see something new, not something they see everyday walking down the street.
 
The more eccentric, the more people will remember, the more publicity your line will get.
And there is a chance Lady Gaga might wear it.
