why do everyone expects a girl to be the one that always cook?

my friend grandma came over and she didnt like to cook.and her grandma went on n on about a lady should do this a lady should do that.
and that she wont find a man if she isnt the "housewife" type

she told me she hated cooking . i thought her grandma was a bit harsh
