Why do educated, affluent parents make their children overweight/obese?

I have a relative who is an educated, affluent woman, who has a single child, and she has made this child very overweight. She is not just a little bit chubby, she is 8 years old and weighs only 15 lbs less than me (I am 5'7" and in my early 20s). When the child was younger, she didn't have a weight problem, but as she got older, she started to develop bad eating habits. She doesn't eat until the afternoon, she eats 3-5 bars of ice cream at a time, her mother takes her to fast food places 2-4 times a week, her mother always has junk food and snacks in the car, she eats a lot of takeout because neither of her parents cook, etc. Both of her parents are intelligent and reasonable enough to know that something is wrong. You might say that this is none of my business, but I babysit this child about 2 times a week on average, and my relative visits often. I have never said anything to her mother about this, but other people have, and she gets very defensive and upset when the subject is brought up. It just makes me worried whenever I see the child, because she gets bigger and bigger all the time.
lilloric, I emphasize that she is educated and affluent because she has an advanced degree, a career in education and a job working with children. This may sound harsh, but I think she of all people should know better.
