Why do dogs have this obsession with sticking their heads out of car windows?

Whenever I take my dog somewhere in my car, he always sits in th front seat and sticks his head out the window. And when i roll the window up, he paws at the window and whines fer me to roll it down. I just got my driver's lisence so i'm probably a little paranoid but I keep thinkin like what if he gets his head smacked off by a tree branch er somethin. is it really just a harmless thing or what?

I think they have an instinct that makes them like to run fast, this triggers it

At least, that's always been my pet theory
