why do dogs eat poo when they have a good sense of smell and taste?

Most of the time when a dog does that, it is because they are lacking a needed nutrient. Try vitimines or a healthier food.

Dogs smell things differently to us.

they like strong pungent, (and often highly unpleasant things).

to them, garbage etc. smells just lovely!

Friends dog does this and the vet said that it is probably a habit and it needs to stop because it can cause other problems. The dog needs to be trained not to eat it. It takes a little time and constant supervision but it will stop if you work it.
