Is this the main quality among leaders? Is composure that important? Would our former great leaders of the past have been elected if running today? I personally feel as if they couldn't compete with the level of debates today. If Teddy, Abe, Franklin, Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy were running I Honestly do not think that they would be elected today, because I feel that we put such an emphasis on debates today. So this would eluminate their chances. How are we to know we haven't considered a Washington, Roosevelt, etc.. when we weight them by their ability to verbaly defend and attack?

I believe all the men you mentioned would have excelled in debates. They were brilliant orators with the conviction to defend their beliefs.

If politicians can't defend their beliefs, why should we believe they know what they are talking about? A debate is for defending your stance on the issues and persuading your detractors why your stance is best. Anyone who can't do that won't be a very effective leader.
