Why do Conservatives feel that Obama controls the media?

As an example, I only learned yesterday of the nation-wide school speech yesterday, and on;y because I found an article about the outrage.

Wouldn't it stand to reason if the media was under Obama's direction, that I would have known about the speech before outrage?

As a note, I am neither Liberal nor Conservative, nor do I support any politician.
 
No...you could have been away from the media for an extended period of time, like I am when I travel or ride horseback.
I don't feel the President Obama so much controls the media (though I am certain he will try) as I feel that the media pushes him and his agenda without question.
Helen Thomas spoke up recently; look at the administrations reaction to her.
