Why do cats mark their territory?

I understand why wild cats mark their territory. But why do 3 of my 6 indoor cats which for the most part get along mark their territory?
 
You answered your own question...in your question! They don't feel completely safe and want the others to stay in their territory. They are threatened by eachother, but maybe not very much as you say they still get along for the most part. Hope I answered your question well enough? :)
