Why do Canadians say "go to university" rather than "go to college"?

In the USA, post secondary schooling is split into two levels. There are colleges which generally seldom offer anything past a bachelor's degree or maybe only in one or two programs. And they seldom do any research. Then there are the universities that do research and offer allot of masters degrees and doctorates.

In the USA there are as many colleges as universities.

In Canada, the post secondary schools have pretty well all upgraded themselves to "University" level. There are very few colleges in Canada. Thus, a Canadian says they are going to "University".

When an American says they are going to "college", they mean they may be going to a college or a university.

In Canada, the definition of college is different. A college is a place where people go to learn trades, etc. A standard four-year postsecondary institution is a university, not a college.

I have no idea about your cartoon question, though.

It just sounds so wrong saying I'm going to university... I'm just curious why they say it like that.

ALSO- in Canadian cartoons, like 6teen, what proof is there that the show is supposed to take place in Canada?
