Why do bikes use chromium?

why do bmx bikes use chromium? i'm trying to do a project for chem where you pick an element and try to advertise it by having it used in something. i picked chromium because i knew that bmx bikes use chromoly because they are lighter and stronger or something. coudl somebody fill me in on the details and break it down for me and tell me just exactly what is so amazing about chormoly that they use it in bike frames? thanks
