The plot is the framework on which the story hangs. Characterization is both the viewpoint from which the plot is seen and the development of the plot via the human element. Setting can be many things, adding a context for the plot, or colour to the plot, or be mere decoration.
Unlike the other three, irony and satire are not vital to a story, but they can add relevance to it by using the story as a mirror to reflect real life, which some hold to be the point of all fiction.
