Why do Americans say that it was Americans that won the War of Independence?

The people of the British colonies did not consider themselves as Americans and neither did anyone else. These people considered themselves as very British but they just wanted to govern themselves. So really it was the British colonists who won the war, not actually Americans.

And that well known saying "THE BRITISH ARE COMING" was not said. It wouldn't have been "THE BRITISH ARE COMING" it would have been something different like "THE ARMY IS COMING"

I learnt this whilst in Boston last summer during a tour of the Massachusetts State House.
