other cultures.? Havng been born in a different country, I noticed that difference as I adjusted to life and daily interactions in this country. Courses in linguistics and sociology confirmed by perceptions. Where I grew people tend to stand much closer to each other in ordinary encounters and conversations. People from such cultures typically will keep moving toward an American while the American will keep backing off (both unconsciously).
Some theories exist:
1.fear of the body (underlying anxiety about sex; fear of contamination )
2.USA a larger geographical entity (a larger country, more space for each indivdual to imagine as their private preserve)
3.Americans are individualists, like to do things on their own (so said a poster elsewhere on YA)

Where are you from ? What's your opinion ? what's your experience? How much space do you claim in normal personal encounters?
